What type of gift can I leave?

There are three main types of gifts in Wills; residuary, pecuniary and specific. Below we explain the three types, as well as wording you may find useful. We always recommend that you use a solicitor to make sure your Will is both legally effective and valid.

A residuary legacy is a percentage of what remains of your estate once your loved ones have been provided for (pecuniary legacies and specific gifts) and any debts or expenses have been deducted.

Many supporters choose to leave this type of gift as it keeps pace with inflation and they don't need to worry whether a specific sum will be enough or too much.

‘Subject to the payment of my debts, funeral and testamentary expenses, I give the whole / ___ per cent of my estate not otherwise disposed of by this my Will to Stonewall Equality Ltd (UK Registered Charity Number: 1101255) of 192 St John Street, London, EC1V 4JY for the general purposes of Stonewall absolutely and I declare that the receipt of the person who professes to be their Treasurer or other proper officer of the said charity shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my executors.’

This is a gift of a specified sum of money of your choosing.

It is worth remembering that if you do decide to leave this type of gift, it is important to review it from time to time as inflation can reduce its value.

‘I give the sum of £___ to Stonewall Equality Ltd (UK Registered Charity Number: 1101255) of 192 St John Street, London, EC1V 4JY for its general charitable purposes absolutely. I further direct that the receipt of the person who professes to be the Treasurer or other proper officer of the said charity shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my executors.’

You may like to leave a specific item to Stonewall, such as a piece of jewellery, an antique or even a property.

‘I give (the item specified) to Stonewall Equality Ltd (UK Registered Charity Number: 1101255) of 192 St John Street, London, EC1V 4JY for its general charitable purposes absolutely. I further direct that the receipt of the person who professes to be the Treasurer or other proper officer of the said charity shall be a full and sufficient discharge to my executors.’

Can I add a gift to Stonewall in my existing Will?

A codicil is a simple way to add a gift to Stonewall to your existing Will. It is a supplement to a Will that can make changes or amendments and allows additions to that Will, without the need to write a new one.

We have provided a draft codicil to simplify the process, but we always recommend that you use a solicitor to make sure your Will is both legally effective and valid.

If you decide to update your Will using a codicil, here are a few basic rules:

  • Make sure that this codicil refers to your latest Will - also clearly identify which codicil this will be (first, second, third etc.)
  • Just like a Will, you will need two independent, adult witnesses to you signing the codicil. They or their spouses (or civil partners) cannot be executors or beneficiaries of your Will or any codicil to it.
  • Your witnesses do not need to see the contents of the codicil, but you must sign and date the codicil in the presence of both witnesses.
  • The witnesses also need to sign the codicil in your presence and need to write in their names and addresses where indicated.
  • Keep the completed codicil with your latest Will (but not attached by pins or staples) in a safe place.
  • Send a copy of the Will and codicil – in a sealed envelope if you prefer, to a trusted person (your executor, solicitor, good friend, or charity beneficiary), and let them know where the original Will and codicil are stored.
What will your legacy be?

Leave a legacy that empowers individuals

Here at Stonewall, we believe that individuals make change happen. This is why we support individual people from across the LGBT community and beyond to make a lasting difference. We equip these people with the tools and confidence to challenge anti-LGBT bullying and celebrate diversity, influencing others in their communities to do the same.

With your support, we will continue to empower people of all ages and backgrounds to be themselves and achieve their full potential no matter where they are.

Leave a legacy that changes hearts and minds

Stonewall is going deeper into our communities than ever before. We strive to reach people we may not have had relationships with in the past and demonstrate the strengths that our differences can bring.

Even the smallest gift can help us work to ensure that LGBT role models and allies are visible throughout public life. You can help us create an environment that enables all lesbian, gay, bi and trans people to participate fully in society, achieving a world where everyone, everywhere, is free to be themselves.

Leave a legacy that transforms institutions

Institutions have power and influence – and with your help, so do we. At Stonewall, we know that our work will have a greater impact by transforming some of our greatest institutions.

Your gift, however big or small, could help us continue our work with organisations here and abroad, to ensure they offer inspiring, safe, accepting environments for all lesbian, gay, bi and trans people.

We also help these institutions to understand the huge benefits that LGBT people can bring, from workplaces and schools, to sports clubs and religious institutions.

Your support will help bring valuable experience and perspective to many new organisations, helping them, their employees and service users to continue to flourish.

Leave a legacy that changes laws

Stonewall continues to campaign and lobby government to change laws, ensuring equality for LGBT people is not just socially accepted, but legally recognised. Trans people do not have the legal support that would enable them to truly be themselves. Anti-LGBT hate crime continues to rise. Inclusive sex and relationship education is still lacking.

With your gift, we will fight to ensure that the laws affecting LGBT people are reviewed and reformed. Stonewall will continue to work with the government, making sure those with real power do not grow complacent about the rights of lesbian, gay, bi and trans people. We will work with international activists to help them to change laws in their own countries.

You can leave a legacy that gives everyone, everywhere the freedom to be themselves.
