What you can do

The Stonewall LGBTQ+ Leadership Programme

The Stonewall Leadership Programme provides you six months of specialist development and support.

The six-month programme begins with a residential 30 Nov-2 Dec 2022, followed by regular skillshares and ending with a reunion. There are two tracks, providing specific development for both aspiring and existing leaders.

Applications for this programme have now closed.

As LGBTQ+ leaders we know the impact our identity has on our leadership. We also often feel a drive to create more inclusive workplaces. This leadership programme provides you with a space to nurture your leadership development. It also creates opportunities to consider your power to transform the workplace around you.

Developed by and for LGBTQ+ leaders, this year's programme will be facilitated by Stonewall's CEO Nancy Kelley and our Director of Programmes Liz Ward. The programme balances expertise and peer learning to support you and 39 other leaders from different organisations to develop together.

You’ll also build a supportive network to continue to collaborate and share opportunities.

This was fantastic (10/10) and the Lead Facilitators are so brilliant with their energy, enthusiasm, skill and knowledge - we were very very lucky to be led by them.

What will I get from the programme?

This programme has existed for over 20 years, it’s grown and changed with new generations of leaders. It’s now the only programme that gives you the chance to:

  • Reflect on the importance of your identity and the value it creates in your leadership practice
  • Understand what drives your leadership and what authentic leadership looks like for you
  • Explore what it means to be an inclusive leader, acting in solidarity to create more inclusive workplaces
  • Hear from leaders of the wider LGBTQ+ movement and learn how our actions can create meaningful change
  • Consider how we centre wellbeing in our leadership practice
  • Develop a supportive network of LGBTQ+ leaders to share in the powerful impact of collaboration and knowledge sharing

Great programme! One week on and I am still inspired and buzzing! I left the residential being more confident in my leadership, more aware of my privileges and with a fantastic network that I am sure will drive positive change.

How does the programme work?

This six-month programme kicks off with a 2.5 day residential 30 November – 2 December at the beautiful Fanhams Hall in Ware. We’ll leave behind the everyday of work to create a safe and supportive space to learn and share expertise. You’ll be able to choose one of two tracks, ‘aspiring leadership’ and ‘advancing leadership’ so you can tailor the programme to your needs.

This year the programme will be facilitated by Stonewall CEO Nancy Kelley and Director of Programmes Liz Ward providing the opportunity to learn from leaders in the LGBTQ+ movement.

After the residential you’ll be invited to join three digital skillshares on topics chosen by the group. These interactive sessions, facilitated by Stonewall and expert speakers will take place between January and April.

The programme will round off with a reunion event in May to reflect and celebrate as a network of leader

Who should attend?

This programme is open to both aspiring and existing LGBTQ+ leaders.

Leadership looks different in every organisation, many of us are leaders in our network groups and not our day jobs, and some leadership positions can be inaccessible to LGBTQ+ people. There’s no set level or type of leadership you have to achieve in order to access the programme.

You can select from two ‘tracks’ within the programme. As a guide we’d say that if you’ve been working on your leadership for fewer than five years, then the ‘aspiring leadership’ track is right for you, if it’s been more than five years, you’re better off selecting ‘advancing leadership’.

How do I apply?

To be considered for a place on this year’s programme, please complete this application form. If you need to complete this in a different format, please email us.

The application form will ask you more about your approach to leadership, what you’re hoping to get from the programme and what you’ll bring to the group.

We particularly welcome applications from people who are underrepresented in LGBTQ+ leadership, including People of Colour, trans people, working class people and people with disabilities. We take steps to ensure that the programme is an inclusive, safe and welcoming space for more marginalized members of our community.

Applications close on 9th November.

Reunion (May 2023)

For the final part of the programme, we’ll come together again to reflect on what we’ve learnt and find collective solutions to remaining or new challenges. This will be a supportive and affirming space to share openly with one another and set the foundations for the continued development of the network. We’ll also make time to celebrate together as we close off the programme.
