These FAQs are for schools, colleges and settings who are already members of the Stonewall School & College Champion programme on 1st September 2020.

What's changed about my membership?

We sent out a newsletter on 7th September 2020 with lots of detail about what’s changing in the School & College Champions programme, so be sure to check your inbox and your Junk folder if you haven’t seen that yet. The main changes are:

  • New School & College Champion Awards
  • New membership fees based on organisation size
  • New e-learning so you can complete training online (with free places when you renew your membership)

Your membership still includes a poster and sticker pack, members-only education resources and bespoke support from our Education & Youth team.

Why have you made these changes?
Last year, we asked our Members what they liked about being Stonewall School & College Champions and what changes they’d like to see in the future. Our new membership model reflects the feedback we received. We’re a very small team working with hundreds of schools and colleges: this new way of doing things is more efficient and means we can spend more time on our Awards and on developing training and resources, so that you’re always getting the best membership benefits.
Why do some schools and colleges have to pay more?
We’ve introduced different membership bands based on the number of learners you have. This makes our work more affordable for smaller schools. All memberships come with lots of benefits included in the price you pay. If you’re a bigger school or college with more learners, you could receive more free e-learning places for your staff, so your membership fee is still good value for money. You’re also likely to use our resources more and share them with greater numbers of staff and learners. Our membership fees are amongst the most competitive for similar-sized membership programmes. The fees we charge cover the costs of running the programme – we don’t make a profit on this work, so every penny of your membership fees goes into developing quality support for LGBTQ+ inclusion.
Do I have to pay more right away?

There’ll be nothing to pay until your current year of membership expires. When your membership is expiring, we’ll get in touch with you to invite you to renew.

To thank you for your loyalty as a member, we’re offering a special grace year deal: if it’s cheaper for you, you’ll be able to renew your membership for one year at just £200 + VAT, regardless of how many learners you have. You’ll get two free e-learning places with the grace year deal. This is a one-time only deal. Next time you renew, you’ll need to pay the correct membership fee for the size of your organisation.

If you want to, you can waive the grace year deal and pay the correct membership fee when you renew – if you’re a bigger school or college with more learners, this will mean you get more free e-learning places. We’ll make it easy for you to see what your options are and tell us what you’d like to do.

How do I renew my membership?
When your membership is due to expire, we’ll contact you by email to let you know. We’ll tell you in the email how to renew. It’s a really easy process: you’ll just need to fill in an online form and we’ll do the rest. We’ll send you an invoice once we’ve processed your renewal.
How will I know what membership fee to pay?

We’re offering all current members a grace year deal: if you want to, you can renew your membership for one year at just £200 + VAT if it’s cheaper for you. This is a one time only deal. You’ll be able to tell us when you complete the renewal form if you’d like to take advantage of the grace year deal. All you need to do is keep an eye out for your renewal email – the rest will be easy.

You can only take advantage of the grace year deal once, so next time you renew you’ll need to pay the correct fee for your organisation depending on how many learners you have. We’ll make it easy for you: when you fill in our online renewal form, you’ll tell us how many learners you have and we’ll send you an invoice for the correct membership fee.

You can find a table of membership fees at the bottom of this page. Check how many learners you have and look at the relevant row of the table to see what your new membership fee will be.

Do I get free e-learning places?
When you renew your membership with us, you’ll get a number of free e-learning places. If you renew on the grace year deal, you’ll get two free places. We’ll email you access codes for these once we’ve processed your renewal. If you pay the full membership fee for your organisation, you could get more free places: the table of membership fees below shows you how many places you’ll get.
I'm a bigger school or college, so I'm eligible for more free e-learning places once I start paying the new membership fee. I want to pay the new membership fee when I renew instead of taking up the grace year deal so that I can get more free places. Can I do that?
Yes! When your membership is expiring, we’ll let you know and we’ll send you an online form to fill in. You can tell us on the form if you’d rather waive the grace year deal and start paying your new fee now.
I want to access e-learning now, do I have to wait until I renew?
If you want to access e-learning before you renew, you can buy places at a discounted rate of £25 + VAT per place in our online shop. Free places are only available when you renew.
Are you offering any in-person training?
At the moment, all in-person training is suspended. This is to keep both you and us safe during the Coronavirus pandemic. We may offer in-person training in the future and we’ll let you know if courses are available to book. You can access our training online.
I can't renew my membership this year. Can I still access Stonewall training and resources?
We understand that sometimes you might need to take a break from membership. Renewing with us is always optional. If you don’t renew, your membership will lapse and you won’t be able to access your membership benefits. However, there are lots of free resources on our website, and non-members can book places on our e-learning courses for £35 + VAT per place. Remember, if you’re no longer a member, you won’t be able to apply for an Award, book 1-1 bespoke support, qualify for member discounts on e-learning or access our members-only resources.
Are there new Awards?
Yes! Get started with your application today.
But I already have a Bronze/Silver/Gold Award. Does that mean it's expiring?
The Award you currently hold still reflects great work and it’s okay to keep displaying your Award certificate and logo if you want to: however, all old School & College Champion Awards will expire in September 2022. Our brand new Awards, which launch in February 2021, will have new certificates and logos to show that they’re our most up to date Awards. Even if you already hold an Award from us, we’d strongly recommend that you apply for a new Award once they’ve launched in February 2021. Our criteria are changing and our new Awards reflect up-to-the-minute best practice, so if you won your Award a little while ago, it’s a great idea to check your work meets current standards of best practice.
How do I apply for a new Award?
Visit our awards page for more information.
I want to start preparing my application. When can I see the criteria for the new Awards?
Criteria will be available to view in November so that you can start preparing your application even before the Awards launch.
Do I need to have my Bronze Award before I can apply for Silver or Gold?
No! Our new Awards are marked on a points-based system. You’ll submit a single application and we’ll grade it Bronze, Silver or Gold depending on how many points you score. You can apply once in every active membership year.

Questions for new members

These FAQs are for schools and colleges who are not yet members of the Stonewall School & College Champion programme and are interested in becoming members

How do I sign up?
Your school or college can sign up to become a member by filling in the Membership Registration Form online here. When you fill in this form, we’ll process your application and raise an invoice for your membership fee, so please make sure you’ve got permission and budget approval to become a member before you submit the form. Membership belongs to your school, college or organisation, not to you as an individual.
How do I pay?
We’ll raise an invoice and send it to the Finance contact you give us when you complete your membership registration form. We can’t take credit card payments at this time.
How will I know what fee to pay?
The membership fees table at the bottom of this page tells you what your membership fee will be depending on the number of learners you have. We’ll raise an invoice for the correct fee when we process your membership application – all you need to do is fill in the online form with the correct information about your school or college.
What does my membership include?
Click here to find out about all your membership benefits. Your membership includes a number of free e-learning places for your staff, access to our Awards, exclusive members-only resources, a poster and sticker pack, bespoke support from our expert team and more.

How do I apply for an award?
Visit our awards page for more information.
How many free e-learning places can I get? How can I access them?
The table of membership fees tells you how many free e-learning places you’re entitled to. We’ll email you access codes for your free places once we’ve processed your membership. Want more places? You can buy as many as you like in our online shop – and you’ll benefit from member discounts on single places as well as bulk-buy discounts if you want to buy a bundle of places for a larger group of staff.
Are you offering in-person training?
At the moment, all in-person training is suspended. This is to keep both you and us safe during the Coronavirus pandemic. We may offer in-person training in the future and we’ll let you know if courses are available to book. You can access our training online.
How long does membership last?
Your membership lasts for one calendar year. We’ll let you know when your membership is due to expire and you’ll have the option to renew.
How much does it cost to renew?
You’ll pay the same fee to renew – you'll find the cost in the fee table. You’ll get all the same membership benefits, as well as access to any new resources, events or other benefits we’ve developed for members.
Is my membership transferable?
No – membership belongs to a school, college or institution rather than to an individual member of staff, so if you move on from your school or college, you’ll need to sign your new organisation up as a member.
How do I access my membership benefits?

Don’t worry, we’ll make sure you get your membership benefits! Once we’ve processed your membership application and you’ve paid your fee, we’ll send you a welcome email, give you access codes for your free e-learning places and get you sorted out with log-in details for our website so that you can browse and download members-only resources.

We’ll send you a School & College Champions newsletter every half term where you can find out all about our most exciting new resources, new e-learning options and upcoming events for members.

All you need to do is keep an eye on your inbox!
